Android surpasses the iPhone

Research firm Gartner today reported that the Android’s share of the smart phone market has surpassed that of the iPhone. From the figures reported by Gartner in the quarter of last year, Android only had a market share of 3.5 percent. End of the third quarter this year it has grown to a 25.5 percent share, which is staggering when you realise that its a change of 22 percent in only been a year.

What I wonder with this information is a simple question. Would Android be as successful now if it was not open source? Would it of been successful without the community? Without the multiple manufacturers of smart phones?

In my opinion the answer to these questions would be that it would not of been as successful over the same year if it was not open source. It would of reached this success over a much longer period of time. Because a community can work 24 hours and 7 days a week all year round with thousands of brains all working on the same goals and the fact that Google is actively updating there software and supports this community shows the amazing growth a project can take.

This is not to say a similar project would get the same success as long as they went open source. But the fact that it shows a company like Google and the open source community when working together can bring great things to the world.
