DVD playback with Fedora 14

From a fresh install Fedora 14 is not able to play copy-protected DVDs, even original DVDs that you own. I can’t understand why Red Hat does not have this packaged by default since the Hollywood Studios are not against Open Source. They are just against illegal piracy.

Well here are the steps to install/enable DVD playback in Fedora 14. I hope you enjoy.

  1. su
  2. rpm -Uvh http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/rpm.livna.org/livna-release.rpm
  3. yum install libdvdcss
  4. Enjoy your DVD!

  1. You’re the MAN!

I’ve been busting my head on this for weeks. Got Fedora 14 and some videos from the local Public Library and they don’t play no more. WTF? They played with the very same hardware on Fedora 13. As a matter of fact, they don’t play no more on any ‘nix box I have. Your instructions above solved the problem.

There’s no piracy here, just trying to view legally bought movies.

    Namasté
