Tux Linux LogoYou might be completely new to Linux or have already started using Linux but might be wondering where else to go to learn Linux. I am here to give you the best ways to learn Linux from nothing.

Following I believe are the most effective ways of learning about Linux, there are further methods which can be just as effective but I believe these are the easiest for those with limited knowledge on Linux,

  1. Jumping In
  2. This step is to just install Linux as your default operating system. Get rid of your current operating system and live within the Linux goodness. When you find that you can’t find a feature that you were using before, try and search for that feature and see how you can do it on Linux.

Most people including myself, got brought up on Microsoft Windows and we learnt it because there was no other choice. This is the same way of learning of not having another choice but to learn Linux. You could back out but would you really want to have to give yourself more work to revert back to your previous operating system?

  3. Find A Friend
  4. These days Linux is so popular that everyone has at least one friend who is using Linux at home.

If you can’t find any friends who use Linux you can always join a LUG (Linux User Group) which are usually monthly meetings which linux users gather to talk about all things Linux. You just have to search in Google to help you find a LUG.

The point of this is to get a friend to help you. One on one sessions with someone that knows what they are doing are amazing. This method is also good to incorporate into the first method of just ‘jumping in’.

  5. Learn By Self-Studying With A Linux Certification
  6. There are Linux certifications and courses which allow you to self-study at your own pace.

    Benefits of Self-Study

    • Freedom.
    • Get to work at your own pace.
    • No obligations. If you find that Linux is just not for you, all you have to do is put the book down.
    • No need for travel costs. Very helpful for those that live in a remote area, don’t live near a college or colleges do not provide a course on Linux.

    Disadvantages of Self-Study

    • Even though Self-Study does a good job catering to beginners there tends to be a greater learning curve as Self-Study books try to squeeze a lot of information into one or two books.
    • Lots of motivation and discipline is needed to Self-Study.
    • Lack of a instructor that could of aided you in your studies.

  7. Enroll Into A Linux Course
  8. Due to the increasing popularity and use of Linux in the enterprise environment, a increasing number of educational institutions are providing an increasing range of Linux courses.

    Benefits of Provided Linux Courses

    • A teacher that knows what they are doing are worth their weight in gold.
    • You have an obligation to finish. Not just about wasting money on fees, but also other students knowing if you ever leave.
    • No need to buy new resources such as a new computer system.
    • Being able to network with other students with similar interests as your own.

    Disadvantages of Provided Linux Courses

    • A bad teacher can be toxic and leave a bad taste in your mouth. Not to mention can teach you wrong.
    • Travel costs and time to travel can be a burden.
    • The costs of fees and books can add up to a large amount of money. This is where some research will help in reducing these cost or to get most of your money.

It’s worth mentioning that picking a way of learning Linux, it’s good to look at the following to allow a more thorough and enjoyable learning experience,

  • Study habits
  • Circumstances
  • Time allowance
  • Environment
